Hacksaw Ridge

The latest Mel Gibson blockbuster movie is the moving and inspiratonal story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss who, because of his faith, refused to carry a weapon. Branded a coward he endured every attempt by fellow soldiers and his superior officers to drive him out of the US Army. Instead he became an army medic and went into one of the bloodiest battles of WWII on Hacksaw Ridge unarmed.

After the US Army were pushed back Desmond Doss “the coward” remained behind and rescued 75 wounded American and Japanese soldiers; lowering them down the escarpment before going back to save more wounded. Each time he went back with the prayer “Please Lord, help me get one more”.

Do you think that he was right to refuse to bear arms? Is it ever morally right to take a life?  Can faith make a difference when facing extreme situations? What was the faith that drove him forward to rescue “just one more”? Would you like to know more about such faith? Do you have questions about faith? Is there a place for the Bible in 21st century Britain?

The Watering Hole is organising an informal chat over coffee, tea and cake to discuss the values and faith of the Hero of Hacksaw Ridge.

There are two dates: Thursday 23rd 7:30pm and Tuesday 28th 7.30pm in Rufus Room, Calmore Community Centre. Why not come along and add your pennysworth.
