Advent Calendar – December 7
“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” are the words of a Christmas song I particularly like. It conjures up pictures of beautiful snow covered landscapes.
I wonder though what would happen though if we replace the word, “white” with the word “right”. It would then read, “I’m dreaming of a right Christmas”. What would make Christmas right for you? A new laptop, a newer car, parties? Eric Sevareid is thought to have said, “As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is.”
As Christmas 2015 approaches more people are falling below the poverty line, more people than ever are lonely, refugees are flooding into Europe to find a better life for their families or to escape war, terrorism in our cities is a very real threat and war rages in the Middle East.
What would happen if together we tried to make things right in the world – making poverty history, ensuring all were fed, that no one was lonely or ceasing war not just for a day but forever.
That was the manifesto of the man Jesus grew up to be. It is what He offers to all humanity. It’s the reason why Christmas IS worth celebrating?
