Hitting the Target… or Not

This blog is written by guest blogger Linda-Rose Michel. Linda is a student from the USA and has volunteered her time to work to work at The Watering Hole for 2 years. One of her roles is heading up the Random Acts of Kindness project.

I don’t know if you have ever seen a picture on Facebook of a job that was terribly botched with the caption “You Had One Job”. Some of them are mind boggling. It’s unbelievable how things get missed or messed up. My favourite is the picture of a huge transparent bag marked “Ice” that is clearly filled with popcorn. The pictures are hilarious and it’s easy to look and wonder “How on earth did they mess up so badly? They literally had one job”.

At Church in the Forest last week the theme revolved around this idea of figuring out what we felt our “One Job” or target in life was, and how we could “hit the mark”. Although we had a lot of fun with target practice and playing lawn darts for me, the most interesting part was when we sat down to figure out how we could focus on the most important things in life. The question was asked “If you could chat with God and he turned to you and said ‘You had one job’ what would it be?” Everyone’s answers could be summed up by one word, love. Nine year olds agreed with 87 year olds and discovered that at the end of the day love is what matters the most. I know it sounds cliché but maybe there is a reason that everyone agrees.

Maybe that “One Job” is loving others. It is what Jesus told His special friends; that they should “love one another”.

I think that life can be so full of experiences, opportunities, and even devastation, that it’s very easy to forget that most of that stuff means nothing without love. It made me think about the different things in my life that I get distracted by and is ultimately useless. I would be devastated if one day there was a picture of me wasting my time watching movies, shopping, and playing games while ignoring those who needed love with the caption “She Had One Job”.

For me this is a wake-up call and a reminder that it’s the people around me that matter the most. Even when I don’t feel like it, I need to take time to love them, go through life with them, learn alongside them and enjoy a laugh or two with them along the way. That is what the Wartering Hole is all about; live love learn and laugh.

Now every time I see one of those pictures on Facebook, it reminds me of what my own “One Job” is, as well as giving me a good laugh.
